My hobby of genealogy has led me to find that my genes connect my family to a Rabbi Samson Wertheimer (1658 in Worms, Germany) or his brother, Moshe Wertheimer, Rabbi Samson died in 1724 in Vienna, Austria. He was the nephew of Samuel Oppenheimer and they were both financiers of royalty. They were called court financiers! I found this out through taking the familyfinder DNA test with FTDNA and being found by a couple of ladies doing triangulation to find people connected to the surname of Halpern. Personally, I matched 4 of today's Wertheimers and am either 4th or 5th cousins with them with from 60cMs to 80cMs total over anywhere from 17 to 23 segments of chromosomes. My sharing a common ancestor could go back as far as 356 years ago, but I would guess someone in his family that was carrying these genes as well, perhaps a Wertheimer. It's exciting to realize that segments of someone's genes have gone to each generation intact, losing a few cMs along the way till I inherited such segments from my father.
My father's parents were new immigrants from Lithuania and couldn't speak English.
Grandfather Nathan was killed while driving his horse and wagon. His horse was frightened and ran, careening through the streets of SE Portland, and threw out Nathan who hit his head and never woke up, dying in the ancient hospital that one day his ggrandson would work in as a nurse. The only difference is that the ancient one was replaced by a new building.
My father would plotz if he knew his ancestors were court financiers. He had to come up the ladder the hard way. Starting as a kosher butcher, he finally owned Silver Falls Meat Packing Co, and was in competition with such places on the Columbia River as Swift and Armour. There have been a few people that he lent money to in order to give them a start in their own business.
My brother matched 2 Wertheimers, a 4th and a 5th cousin. Our 1st cousin matched 7 Wertheimers, all 4th cousins a one 5th cousin. A Goldfoot 3rd cousin, discovered a few years ago, matched 4 Wertheimers with 3 that were 4th cousins and one 5th cousin.
Rabbi Wertheimer went to Vienna in 1684 to join his uncle's bank. He leased royal revenues and was one of the chief purveyors of the imperial forces. Together with his son Wolf, lent large sums to the emperor. There were people back then who did have their family genealogies. Rabbi Wertheimer's connected to the famous biblical scholar, RASHI,(1040-1105) France and Rashi was connected to King David (1010-970 BCE) of Israel.
In 1719, Carl VI appointed him chief rabbi of Hungary with judicial authority. Using these connections, he was able to help Jewish communities and got an order from the emperor Leopold that stopped the publication of Eisenmenger's anti-Jewish work Entdecktes Judentum. He also established a fund to help the poor Jews living in Palestine then, as they were living under the Ottoman Empire and had become paupers. This existed until 1914 when WWI started. He had his duties as rabbi and served in a synagogue because some of his Sabbath homilies have been preserved.
The 1920s was a time in Berlin that held many Jews. Wertheim had a central store on Leipziger Platz that featured 83 elevators under a glass-roofed atrium that landmarked prewar Berlin's commercial heart.
Wertheim was a large department store chain in pre-World War II
Germany. It was founded by
Georg Wertheim and operated four stores in Berlin, one in Rostock, one in Stralsund (where it had been founded), and one in Breslau.
The large Wertheim store on
Leipziger Platz in Berlin, seen in the 1920s. It was the biggest department store in Europe at the time.
The chain's most famous store, on
Leipziger Platz in Berlin, was constructed in 1896. It featured 83 elevators and a glass-roofed atrium, and was one of the three largest department stores (
Warenhäuser) in Berlin, the others being
Hermann Tietz and
Kaufhaus des Westens. Brian Ladd called it “the crown jewel of the main shopping street."
[1] The building was badly damaged in World War II and fell in the no man's land between East and West Berlin after the division of the city. The ruins were demolished in the 1950s.
Rabbi Wertheimer and his brother were able to have heirs. Today, many people carry some of their genes. There have been others before us, of course. Joseph Von Wertheimer, (1800-1887), He was an Austrian educator, author and businessman, establishing the first kindergarten in Vienna in 1830.

Max Wertheimer (1880-1943) was a German-Jewish Psychologist who taught in Germany until 1933. Because of the growing anti-Semitism, he left and went to New York where he taught at the New School for Social Research. He was the founder of the Gestalt theory of psychology. This {led the Gestaltists to conclude that the mind imposes its own patterns of organization on the stimuli it receives rather than merely recording them, and that the significance of the mental "wholes" thus formed transcends that of their component parts.} Obviously he was a man who thought "outside the prevailing box." Max thought of this because "the Gestaltists were at odds with the popular school of psychology of the day, known as structuralism, whose proponents believed that the mind consists of units or elements and could be understood by mapping and studying them in combination. Gerard Wertheimer |
Alain and Gerard Wertheimer are billionaires. "Wertheimer was born to a
Jewish family, the son of
Jacques Wertheimer and Eliane Fischer. His grandfather,
Pierre, co-founded the
House of Chanel. The privately held company is run by Alain who has presided over the acquisition of several non-Chanel brands, including Eres Lingerie and beachwear,
Tanner Krolle saddles and leather goods, and
Holland & Holland, a British gunmaker. Based in
France, the Wertheimer brothers own French vineyards including
Château Rauzan-Ségla in
Margaux, France, and
Château Canon in
Saint-Emilion, both of which have won rave reviews from
oenophiles. Both brothers are enthusiastic
equestrians who also inherited and operate an important
Thoroughbred horse racing stable they call
La Presle Farm or Wertheimer farm for racing in the
United States and is known as
Wertheimer et Frère partnership in France."
"Despite tapping one of the industry's most famous creative directors, Karl Lagerfeld (in 1983), to front one of the most famous brands in the world, Alain and Gérard Wertheimer, the billionaire brothers who have privately held Chanel for over 30 years, are two of the least famous owners in fashion. Unlike Pinault and Arnault - regular front row fixtures at their brands' seasonal runway shows - the Wertheimers have managed to largely shy from the public eye.
It's interesting that there were such people as Jewish court financiers. This happened because of a great amount of anti-Semitism. Jews weren't allowed to own land, become farmers like the population of the countryside. Loaning money was considered a terrible thing to do, but at the same time, it was necessary to get money. They gave this profession to the Jews who they didn't like because they wouldn't convert to Christianity. Thus, the kings and emperors needed money and had to go to Jewish money-lenders. Often there was a disastrous ending to the lives of money-lenders. Some were slaughtered by the kings who didn't want to pay the interest. If the ruler was half-way decent, they lived a good life.
Now, this fascinating discovery has led to something we shouldn't be surprised about. My brother is a psychologist, now retired. My son is a nurse at St. Vincent's Hospital, but at the new one, of course. Nathan would have been his ggrandfather who died there. The greatest fact is that my father, born a pauper, son of immigrants, raised himself up in the American dream of being an owner of his own business! Genes helped a lot!
